Would a divorce expo be helpful for Maryland residents?

With up to half of all marriages ending in divorce, more and more Maryland couples are seeking advice and direction on how to go about ending their marriages, such as how to navigate family law issues like securing legal help and resolving child custody as well as how to move on once the divorce has finalized. Some might find it helpful to attend a divorce expo, such as the one that took place in New York City last weekend.

Interestingly, the venue had held a wedding expo just prior to the divorce event. Whereas the tickets to the wedding expo ranged from $30 to $40, tickets for the divorce expo started at almost double that rate--$75.

"Start Over Smart: A Modern Divorce Expo" emphasized teaching people how to obtain an economically efficient divorce, how to reduce divorce's negative impact on a couple's children, how to find a support group to help one through a divorce and how to make personal changes to help with the transition into singlehood. To this end, the expo hosted more than 100 booths and exhibits, including life coaches, financial planners and makeover artists.

Expo attendees could listen to lawyers giving general information about family law. People could also get advice about the best way to go about seeking legal counsel regarding divorce proceedings.

The creators of the expo were a mother-daughter team. The mother's parents had divorced when she was a young child, and the daughter has recently gone through a divorce after deciding to end her marriage. They had heard about a similar event in Paris, and flew to France to observe it for themselves. They were so impressed that they decided to bring the concept to the United States.

Couples in Maryland should note that the two creators want to counter the negative social stigma that so often accompanies divorce and instead emphasize that, while divorce is difficult, one can have a productive divorce and lead a happy life afterward.
